# PostHog through toolfare

> Trends, funnels and retention from your PostHog project, and read-only HogQL when the question needs it — answered inside ChatGPT, Claude, Codex or Cursor, next to the campaigns that sent those users. Connect PostHog to toolfare once; your AI reads it with your own login, and every read is free.

## Use it from your agent

Paste this into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any agent with a shell:

> Set up https://toolfare.ai/skill.md, then use toolfare to answer: Where do users drop off between sign-up and first project?

Apps without a terminal connect toolfare as an MCP server: https://toolfare.ai/docs#connect

## Use it from a script

```sh
mkdir -p ~/.local/bin
curl -fsSL 'https://toolfare.ai/toolfare/toolfare.mjs' -o ~/.local/bin/toolfare
chmod +x ~/.local/bin/toolfare
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
export TOOLFARE_MCP_URL='https://api.toolfare.ai/mcp'
toolfare login
```

Then connect your PostHog account in the toolfare console (https://toolfare.ai/posthog#setup); calls fail until it is connected.

Sign in once per machine; the CLI renews the sign-in itself. On a CI runner or another server, create an API key in the toolfare console and set it as `TOOLFARE_API_KEY` instead of signing in. Paid calls on one sign-in or key run one at a time. `--max-cost` refuses a call quoted above that many credits (1,000 credits = $3).

## Tools

### Trends, funnels, retention and HogQL

Tool: `posthog_query`

Runs a read tool from PostHog’s MCP against your project — insight queries for trends, funnels and retention, validated read-only HogQL, and the data schema to write it against.

Ask:
- Where do users drop off between sign-up and first project?
- What is week-one retention for users who signed up last month?
- How many people triggered the checkout event yesterday?

### What your AI is allowed to ask PostHog

Tool: `posthog_list_tools`

PostHog’s live MCP tool catalogue for your project, each tool marked as a read that runs or a change that would need review.

Ask:
- Which PostHog tools can you use through toolfare?
- Can you run SQL against our PostHog project?

### The PostHog projects your toolfare account can read

Tool: `posthog_list_projects`

The projects you connected to toolfare, so a question runs against the right one.

Ask:
- Which PostHog projects are connected?
- Use our production project for this.

## Price

Free to read: it is your own account, so toolfare pays nobody for the data and charges nothing per read. No per-read charge to observe. Reads need no purchase. Like every toolfare call, they run only while your balance holds at least $0.003, and that is not spent.

Balances and top-ups are in US dollars. Quotes and `--max-cost` count credits: 1,000 credits = $3 ($0.003 each).

## Use it when

- You want to know what paid users did after they arrived, not just that they arrived.
- You want a funnel or retention curve without building the insight yourself.
- The question needs HogQL, and you would rather describe it than write it.

## Look elsewhere when

- You want to create an insight, a feature flag or an annotation. Writes need review and are not available through the MCP connection.
- You want ad spend or CPA. PostHog does not know what you paid — that is your ad account.

## Limits

- Only allowlisted read tools run; anything else is reported as needing review, and review is not reachable through the MCP connection.
- HogQL is validated as read-only before it runs, so a query that would modify anything is refused.
- Only projects you connected are readable; PostHog’s listing of every project in your PostHog account is not available.
