# DataForSEO through toolfare

Sign in once per machine; the CLI renews the sign-in itself. On a CI runner or another server, create an API key in the toolfare console and set it as `TOOLFARE_API_KEY` instead of signing in. Paid calls on one sign-in or key run one at a time. `--max-cost` refuses a call quoted above that many credits (1,000 credits = $3).

## Price

Quoted to your AI before the search runs, then charged at the cost DataForSEO reports for that exact search. Metered from the `cost` field DataForSEO returns inside its own response, so the charge follows DataForSEO’s own price for the search rather than a table kept here. No fixed price table, on purpose: an upstream reprice needs no change here. A search that fails is never charged.

Balances and top-ups are in US dollars. Quotes and `--max-cost` count credits: 1,000 credits = $3 ($0.003 each).

## Use it when

- You want to know what currently ranks for a keyword, not what an index estimated last month.
- You are checking a ranking from a specific country or language.
- You want the pages you are up against before writing one.

## Look elsewhere when

- You want your own site’s clicks and positions. Search Console has them exactly, and reading your own account is free.
- You want ads, People Also Ask or other engines as well as organic links. Ask a full results-page source.
- You want keyword volume, difficulty or backlinks. That is an SEO index, not a live results page.

## Limits

- Organic results only — no ads, maps or other results-page features.
- Location is DataForSEO’s full location name, such as “United States”; language is a two-letter code.
- Pay as you go from your toolfare balance, in US dollars; there is no subscription. A call runs when your balance covers its quote.
