# Ahrefs through toolfare

> Domain Rating, backlinks, organic traffic and keyword difficulty, answered inside ChatGPT or Claude. You need no Ahrefs seat and no API key of your own: toolfare buys each call, tells your AI the price before it runs, and charges the units the call actually consumed.

## Use it from your agent

Paste this into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any agent with a shell:

> Set up https://toolfare.ai/skill.md, then use toolfare to tell me the Domain Rating and estimated organic traffic of stripe.com

Apps without a terminal connect toolfare as an MCP server: https://toolfare.ai/docs#connect

## Use it from a script

```sh
mkdir -p ~/.local/bin
curl -fsSL 'https://toolfare.ai/toolfare/toolfare.mjs' -o ~/.local/bin/toolfare
chmod +x ~/.local/bin/toolfare
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
export TOOLFARE_MCP_URL='https://api.toolfare.ai/mcp'
toolfare login
```

Sign in once per machine; the CLI renews the sign-in itself. On a CI runner or another server, create an API key in the toolfare console and set it as `TOOLFARE_API_KEY` instead of signing in. Paid calls on one sign-in or key run one at a time. `--max-cost` refuses a call quoted above that many credits (1,000 credits = $3).

## Tools

### How strong a domain is, in one call

Tool: `ahrefs_domain_rating`

Ahrefs Domain Rating and Ahrefs Rank for one domain — the authority score, without paging through anything.

Cost: About $0.07 a domain.

Ask:
- How strong is this competitor’s domain?
- Get me the Domain Rating for example.com.

```sh
toolfare run ahrefs_domain_rating --input '{"target":"stripe.com","date":"2026-10-01"}' --max-cost 50 --json
```

### How much search traffic a site gets

Tool: `ahrefs_site_metrics`

Estimated organic traffic, ranking-keyword counts and traffic value, with the paid-search equivalents — one call per domain.

Cost: About $0.07 a domain.

Ask:
- How much organic traffic does this competitor get?
- How many keywords does example.com rank for?

```sh
toolfare run ahrefs_site_metrics --input '{"target":"stripe.com","date":"2026-10-01"}' --max-cost 50 --json
```

### Who links to them, and with what anchor

Tool: `ahrefs_backlinks`

The individual inbound links for a target — linking page, anchor text, and the strength of the domain it came from.

Cost: Billed per link returned, from about $0.07; set a row limit.

Ask:
- Who links to this competitor?
- Show me the backlink profile for example.com.

### What a keyword is worth, and how hard it is

Tool: `ahrefs_keywords_overview`

Monthly search volume, keyword difficulty, cost-per-click and traffic potential — for one keyword or a list of them.

Cost: From about $0.07; each keyword is one billed row.

Ask:
- How many people search for marketing automation?
- What is the keyword difficulty for ai agents?

```sh
toolfare run ahrefs_keywords_overview --input '{"keywords":"payment gateway","country":"us","select":"keyword,volume,difficulty,cpc"}' --max-cost 50 --json
```

### Also available

## Price

Quoted to your AI before the call runs, then charged on the units Ahrefs itself reports for that exact call. Metered from Ahrefs’ own `x-api-units-cost-total-actual` response header at about $0.00135 per unit. A call consumes at least 50 units — a Domain Rating or traffic snapshot costs about $0.07 — and a list call costs its rows times the columns asked for: a 500-row keyword expansion with six columns consumed 21,000 units, about $28. A call that returns no usable header falls back to a $0.003 floor. No fixed price table, on purpose: units are what Ahrefs bills, and the charge is read from the response rather than guessed from the endpoint. A call that fails is never charged.

Balances and top-ups are in US dollars. Quotes and `--max-cost` count credits: 1,000 credits = $3 ($0.003 each).

## Use it when

- You want to know how strong a domain is before you compete with it, partner with it, or buy it.
- You are auditing a link profile, or looking for the domains worth asking for a link.
- You need volume and difficulty on a keyword before anyone writes anything.

## Look elsewhere when

- The site is your own and already in Search Console. That data is first-party, exact and free; Ahrefs estimates what Search Console measures.
- You want to know what currently ranks for a keyword. That is a live results page, not an index — ask a search source instead.
- You want app-store rankings. Web search and app search are different indexes with different keywords.
- You only need the totals and are about to page through every backlink. The backlink totals answer that in one call, and every listed link is billed.
- You need a guaranteed-complete link graph. Every backlink index is a crawl, and a crawl is a sample with a date on it.

## Limits

- List calls are billed per row, and Ahrefs returns 1,000 rows when no `limit` is given. The backlink, referring-domain and keyword-expansion cards take a `limit` capped at 100 rows; the one-call totals take none.
- Scoping is per capability, not universal: Domain Rating and the backlink totals take a report date and no country; the traffic metrics take a date and a country; the keyword lookups require a country and take no date. Ask for a scope the capability accepts, or you get its default rather than the one you meant.
- Ahrefs rate-limits the API key upstream, so a burst of queries can be throttled regardless of your toolfare balance.
- Pay as you go from your toolfare balance, in US dollars; there is no subscription. A call runs when your balance covers its quote.
